Week 10: Class Highlights

My AHA moments in the Spring quarter of 2011.

The media had a big impact in society and gender roles. In Chapter 2 it mentions that the gender analysis examines how the media constructs gender roles. Here is a YouTube video I found that shows how these roles in ads, commercials, and movies can play in our lives. Now that I am more aware of this, I am not planning on following the images on how a woman is suppose to act, dress, or be.

In Chapter 5 it mentioned that Magazines were the last printed to become popular. When I read this it was hard to believe because it is very popular. Magazines are all over the place now, and many people buy subscriptions so that they can receive it monthly. Also with Chapter 10 the internet has brought a new way to advertise these magazines and have the readers keep in touch at any time. Magazines like ELLE, Cosmopolitan, NY Times have their own website where the viewers could click on links on what they are about.

T.V. was the most controversial in all media because of what it will do. When television first came out I believe that people were scared what the outcome would be. It was unpredictable. However that wasn’t just the problem, in Chapter 9 there are now controversies on how television shows stereotypes, violence, programs that lack of education, and programs that need parental control. Here is one of the exmaples shown on T.V. that has stereotypes. Stereotypes are bad representations of different races that create these images in our head, which makes us discriminate against others. Here you can see the exaggerated features in the American American character.

Week 9: Media Ethics/Media Law

The media constantly leaks out information about celebrities or politicians all the time. They invade these people’s privacy, which is called Privacy/intrusion.  For instance there was a recently scandal on Arnold Schwarzenegger, the media found out he had a love child and it’s all over the news. It’s a big controversy whether this is a good or bad thing. It ruins the representation of the person’s life, but also at the same time its entertaining and we get to know the real scoop on the politicians, and it can help the audience see who they really are.

Week 8: Propagana in Advertising/PR

According to Mrs. Deck’s link to look up Propaganda techniques are to get the audience to have an emotional appeal not a responsive appeal. Two examples from some of the propaganda techniques are the bandwagon effect and the use of slogans.

The Bandwagon effect is when people do things because many other people do and believe the same things.  A perfect example of that would be when the Giants were doing really well this past year and won World Series. I knew people that had not been to one giants game and they were buying giants gear. The reason for this was because a lot of people were talking about it and this technique made people who didn’t watch baseball or cared for it now want to watch it.  This technique definitely influenced others, and as you will see filled the streets of San Francisco like never before.

Slogans are easy to remember phrases or mottos that business use to catch people’s attention. This is a very good technique to use because it works for a lot of people. When people hear or see a slogan they automatically remember the company that used it. For example McDonalds has a slogan when they say “I am Loving it” and it’s used all around the world. In the McDonalds commercial no matter what language or country you're in they use that slogan.  

Week 7: Internet

The internet it is something that I use everyday. I usually use it to go on Facebook, email, looking up my college accounts, shopping, and to go on Skype. I go on Facebook to catch up with friends and family members that live far away from here. I check my email constantly to be in contact with my teachers and members from a project in a class. I also check my yahoo email for jobs or internship opportunities that I have applied for. I go to news channels a lot to keep applying to their internships like NBC  and Ktvu. As for college accounts I am constantly checking them so that I don’t miss any deadlines. Especially  TritonLink, this is where I go to at least three times a day to check my account. I also Skype a lot with my family from Nicaragua, Miami, and friends from Hawaii and Oregon. I love going shopping online, looking at the fashion that’s in, and getting great deals!!! My favorite shopping website to go on is called Shopbop.

My mom is always on Skype everyday keeping in contact with my family, and my sister is on her Facebook trying to find the latest gossip within her friends. They still haven't put a stop to what they are doing, but if they did try, both of wouldn't be as entertained as they are now.

Week 6: Television

In Chapter 9 it talks about stereotypes on television. Here is an example of an Indian stereotype; people assume that all Indians have a thick accent.
-The length of this video is 32 seconds.
-This video is targeting Indians as people that are easy to push around because of their accents.
-In our Mass comm. workbook it had us list a few stereotypes that we usually see on TV.
-We just took the quiz on Thursday, therefore I am not able to select a question from the quiz.

 

Another stereotype that I saw on TV is this one below. It is targeting that Mexicans are not smart; they can only come up with making a different taco shell.
-This also shows that Mexicans party a lot.
-Once again in Chapter 9 mentions a section about stereotypes.
-The length of this video is 15 seconds long.
-We just took the quiz on Thursday, therefore I am not able to select a question from the quiz.

Week 5: Movies

Lights, Camera, Action!! Movies have always been a great interest of mine. There are several movies I can pick out that I’ve considered my favorite. A recent movie that I would highly recommend to my fellow peers is Shutter Island, which came out in 2010. This movie took place in 1954, it was about a U.S. Marshal named Teddy Daniels who had an assignment on doing an investigation. This investigation consisted of a disappearance of a patient at Boston’s Shutter Island Hospital. His trip there becomes extremely complicated and confusing because things aren’t the way they seem. He becomes crazy and realizes that nothing is real; he also comes to realization about what he did with his wife and children. Which turns into a big twist at the end of the movie.

The reason why I liked this movie so much is because it kept me on the tip of my toes. I wanted to know if there were connections to the people living there, why he kept having images of his wife and children, was there a connection towards the island, was he really crazy? Was it all a set up or was U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniel really a patient there? It wasn’t until the second time I saw it that I finally got everything.

I first saw this movie when it came out in February of 2010 at the AMC Mercado Movie Theater or as other may call it the “silver screen”.  It made the movie a lot better with the surround sounds, dark room, and yummy popcorn.  If you are interested come take a look at the movie trailer below.

Week 4: Magazine

Name of Magazine:  How’z it Magazine

Concept: This magazine will provide you with travel information, tourist and local area to go, Hawaiian/ reggae bands information, tour dates, recipes on Hawaiian foods, activities you can do there, the nightlife style, and you can see the Hawaiian beauty.

Readers: How’z it Magazine is for both genders male and female, and for the ages between eighteen and over to read.

How’z it magazine would be for anyone to read, however I would like to aim for the people who love the Hawaiian culture, music, food or just likes to travel there for vacation. This is a way they can still keep in touch with what’s going on in the island.

How’z it is a better magazine for you. It has deals, packages, updates on Hawaiian bands that are coming to you, beauty pageants, secret recipes, and provides areas to plan a wedding or honeymoon etc. This magazine will provide with information that the others do not have. Other Hawaiian magazines only focus on Oahu which is a popular tourist island, but this will provide you with information on the other islands like Kauai, Big Island, Maui etc.  As of right now there isn’t really a Hawaiian Magazine in the “mainland” , most Hawaiian Magazines are in Hawaii. The only one I would probably consider competition would be surfer magazines; but that just focuses mostly on that sport.

The five advertisements I know will reach out to my readers are deals on a vacation where you can save money, the cover page itself, activities you can do around the islands, discount coupons, and the Shaka sign.

This cover will have a striking few of Waikiki beach, its’ buildings, and Diamond Head.

Week 3: Books

As a child books are read to you, or sometimes when you had a chance you’d skim through them. Children’s books have big pictures with bright colors and fiction stories that sometimes expanded your imagination.  However, as the years passed and you start getting older books started to become uninteresting because they were boring; it wasn’t as enjoyable. Television did not help the situation, it pushed young children and teenagers away from books because watching television entertains the viewer while sitting around doing nothing. I experienced this myself, up until the end of middle school I wasn’t fascinated about reading books. Books started to look the same, and I was simply not interested. Yet, when I came across the books The memory keeper's daughter by Kim Edwards, The Pact by Dr.’s Sampson Davis, George Jenkins, and Rameck Hunt, and lastly Are you my mother? by Philip D. Easrman. I couldn’t keep my hands off them.

Secrets, lies, and tragedy; a novel full of surprises is how I would describe The Memory Keepers Daughter. This is absolutely an outstanding book that I would highly recommend to others. This novel takes place in 1964. Noah and David are a married couple from Kentucky. Norah is pregnant and David is a doctor. She delivers a baby boy named Paul, and then she delivers a baby girl however something wasn’t right; she had down syndrome. David gives the girl to a nurse who keeps her and raises her as her own, until the truth eventually came out and Norah found out. With this short summary, as you can tell there is a lot of commotion in this book. This is why I couldn’t take my hands off the book. This also made me join the Best Buddies club at my high school, which was a great experience for me. The Pact was such an inspirational book to read. This book was about three boys named George, Rameck, and Sam who grew up on the streets of Newark, New Jersey. They all had their individual struggles growing up with poverty, drugs, and gangs surrounding them. However, they managed to survive that environment and became successful doctors. Originally this was required book I needed to read for an English 1A prerequisite class, which I dreaded at first. After reading it, their stories motivated me to follow me dreams and not letting anyone or anything get in the way and if you work hard for what you want, the outcome will be great. This book was not only touching and inspiring to me, but to others as well. So what they did was create a website called The three doctors for the fans and viewers to follow.  

Dr. Seuss books are well known, and have been around for a while. There are a great number of books that have been out too. However, one that stood out to me was called Are you my mother? This book starts off with a little bird hatching from its egg inside of a nest while its mother flies off to go grab food. However the curious little bird jumps off the nest to try and find her. The little bird doesn’t know what it’s mother looks like, so it asks everything it encounters and asks, “Are you my mother?” Eventually the little bird found its mother. The reason why this book stood out to me as a child was because during the process of the little bird finding its mother, it became sad. I wouldn’t have the feeling of not knowing who my mother is, since my mother and I are very close. 

Week 2: Media Impact

The media has a huge impact in today’s society. This obviously isn’t anything new; nevertheless I am here to give some examples that I have observed myself that the media can influence real-life problems. I believe that pop culture is one of them. Watching T.V. is a common thing to do after a long day at work or school, you like to watch the entertainment. But, have you ever stopped and thought what we are watching might be leading teens/ young adults to corrupt behavior? According to IMDB, the reality television show Jersey Shore came out on December 3^rd of 2009. Ever since that day, a great number of people have been following the actions of these reality T.V. stars on the show. For instance, it can be from little things like the usage of phrases that the cast say on the show.  I’ve seen statuses on peoples Facebook saying “I did GTL today, just like Pauly”, which stands for gym, tan, and laundry. Snooki one of the cast member says "waaaahhhhh" if something doesn't go her way; I hear people saying that all the time and quoting her on Facebook too. Also, within a group of friends I have heard them say “I am trying to get it in”, which means they are trying to get laid. This was never said before until after the show aired. Jersey shore has also brought the movement called “fist pumping” this consists of moving your torso up and down to the beat of the music. This is seen a lot at clubs, parties, gatherings, etc. Not only do people imitate the Jersey Shore cast by saying some absurd things or doing the “fist pump” dance movement, but it has brought bad influences on teens. The way the males on the cast act with women is inappropriate behavior. The males go out and bring home different women almost every night. Teens look up to reality T.V. stars and want to imitate them. If this is what they are watching, then what kind of message do you think is being portrayed in their heads?
Music Videos can also influence real-life problems, especially rap/hip-hop videos. I am going to focus more on teenage girls. When teenage girls see the women in these music videos they compare themselves to them. Most of these women come off as extremely sexy, which can direct the path  of young teens exploring more of their sexuality. This can lead to them dressing and acting a certain way thinking they are "cool". Here is an example that I observed when I was younger. Sisqo who is an R&B/ Hip-hop singer and actor came out with a song called “thong” in 2000 influenced a lot of girls in my middle school. I came to school one day and girls had low rise jeans and their thongs sticking out when they sat down. Sisqo’s lyrics and video made an impact on these young girls making them think this is what guys want, and how women should act. Here is another example of how this song and music videos can lead teenage girls to inappropriate behavior.

Week 1: Autobiography

Hello, my name is Jackie and my major is communications and my minor is public relations. I recently got into a couple of UC's and CSU's. However I am aiming towards USC and UCSD which I already got into.  I am currently not working at a job that involves media, but I would love to have the chance to work at a company that emphasizes on the media such as E! news etc.  I strongly believe that is class will help me understand more about mass media and will excel my communication skills.
- There are eight different types of media that are are going to study in this class. Books, Newspaper, Magazines, Movies, Recordings, Radio, Television, and the Internet. In this post I am going to talk about each of these medias and how I have used them throughout the years.

Books: When I was a little kid I liked reading because of the books that were given to me, they had big pictures. Now, I try to read on my free time or when I go work out at the gym. However it seems like there is no time to read due to my busy schedule.

Newspapers: I haven't been interested in reading newspapers because I would prefer reading magazines. Although I sometimes take a glance at the sports section when I see it at my house.

Magazines: I love reading different types of magazines. The reason why is because I like updating myself on the pop culture and also the new fashion the comes in through different parts of the world. I also like home furniture magazines, looking at the different designs is something I am interested in.

Movies: I see movies very often, whether it's at the theater or at home. It has always been a type of entertainment for me and my friends. Also sometimes when my family gets together, we like watching a funny family movie which brings us closer.

Recordings: I sometimes use recordings to leave myself a note or to remind me of something important. I also use recordings when I listen to book that is required for a class.

Radio: The radio is a big part of my everyday life. I usually listen to the radio when I enter my car which I use everyday whether it's going to the school, work, gym, dinner etc.

Television: T.V. is something that I tend to use everyday as well. I use it to watch my favorite shows, news, movies, reality T.V. etc. I believe its important to society because it updates us on things, and it's part of entertainment at home.

Internet: I use the Internet so much. It is very convenient especially when it comes to research and writing papers.Or even at a work place to look up things. For example, I work at a dental office and we need the Internet to look up patients insurance information. I have been using the Internet since I was in middle school and plan on continuing to use it and I usually go online at least twice a day.
